Current String

Brooks

MECCA LEO TEE a.k.a. “Brooks”

Date of Birth:

5/7/2005

Breeding:

AQHA by Mecca Leo Seeker out of Jackie San Tee. This horse came out of Oklahoma.

Color:

Palomino

Brooks came to us through some good friends of ours, Donnie and Torrie Griggs. He was pretty amazing right from the get-go and got the hang of picking up fairly quickly. He has a tendency to be a little bit hot and hard to shut down, but is a dream to be around and a pleasure to ride… and although he loves to run, he has a tendency to be on the lazy side. He was ridden by Lee McLean in the Calgary Stampede’s inaugural “Sidesaddle Race.” There’s a pretty neat sale video on him here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH3a3ju9seI

Personality:

He is a people horse – likes attention, and carries himself very nicely. Has a bit of a princess attitude and is high maintenance. Is a very “clean” horse and doesn’t get dirty in the pen, which is also a plus!

Sully

YAGERMEISTER a.k.a. “Sully”

Date of Birth:

5/7/2005

Breeding:

Sully is a registered Paint by Eternal FX Caesar and out of Disco Jackie. He came to us from Trevor Dean in Fort Shaw, Montana as a last resort… Gary took a chance on him and after more than a year of solid work on him, he made his pickup debut in 2011.

Color:

Palomino

Sully has a lot of “issues” and really thought he wanted to be a bucking horse… but after a lot of work he has settled down and made his pickup debut in 2011. He has a calm disposition, wants to please, and is a natural pickup horse. In January of 2013, Sully pulled a suspensory ligament. He was laid off for a year but has come back and is back in the arena. Age is mellowing him and he’s getting to be quite a pussycat.

Personality:

Sully is surprisingly calm and handles fireworks, loud noises and big rodeos with ease. Solid – he handles anything thrown at him. Former Miss Rodeo America Katherine Merck counts him among her favorites. He’s been ridden through the Calgary Stampede parade sidesaddle. Gentle and friendly, he’s quick to remind you that he can buck anyone off, anytime he wants.

Tango

FRITZ ROYAL FOX a.k.a. “Tango”

Date of Birth:

4/17/2011

Breeding:

AQHA by Fritz Neat Sunglow (a grandson of Fritz Command) and out of Royals Two Foxy. (Royal Three Charge)

Color:

Sorrel

Tango was purchased as a two-year-old with his pasture-mate, “Cash” from Toni Cadigan of Fairfield. We ended up selling Cash as a barrel prospect but kept Tango as a pickup horse prospect. Gary trained him from the start and Jody rides him during the summer. He is very smooth to ride and should be fast. He is a great ranch horse and has been to a few rodeos, just starting to learn about picking up.

Personality:

If there is such a thing as A-D-D in horses, this one has it. He is into absolutely everything and has to put everything in his mouth. He will be a late-bloomer. Very gentle to be around, clipping, bathing, nothing bothers him much but standing still isn’t his forte yet! He’s the first one to the gate – very much a people horse.

SMOOTH COWBOY CHARM a.k.a. “Herbie”

Date of Birth:

4/24/2002

Breeding:

AQHA by Herbies so Handsome and out of Smooth Luvly Louise. Goes back to Smooth Town Rebel on the Dam’s side and Quincy Sun Dun on the Sire’s side.

Color:

Black with a star

Herbie was purchased as a 4 year old from Annalise Blishen of Calgary. Annalise is a good friend of ours and used to ride with the Calgary Stampede Ranch Girls. She raised Herbie, Gary trained him and he started picking up on him in 2008. He is a solid pickup horse but somewhat temperamental.

Personality:

Herbie is a people horse, and is on the small side for a pickup horse. He is very nice to be around but tends to have a Shetland-pony attitude at times. (stubborn!)

Spur

ZIPANIC GOLD a.k.a "Spur"

Date of Birth:

5/2/2010

Color:

Sorrel

Breeding:

Spur is our second purchase from Chad and Erin Fink in Montana. We also have his half brother “Zippy” who was purchased at the NILE sale as a yearling, and who Gary showed at the NILE Futurity for several years. Spur made his pickup debut in 2017 and has become a solid pickup horse. Small in stature, he makes up for it in speed.

Personality:

Spur is a nice horse to be around and is that real pretty deep red color.

Coyote

SLOANS FLY AWAY a.k.a. “Coyote”

Date of Birth:

5/20/2012

Color:

Chocolate Palomino

Breeding:

We purchased Coyote from the Miller’s in Fairfield, Montana… yup – just up the road from us – on a tip from a friend on Facebook! He was bred and raised by Mark & Lynette McMillan of Soap Lake, Washington (the rodeo family “The McMillan Family Trick Riders”) whom we had the pleasure of meeting up with during our rodeo travels and getting some background on the horse. When we purchased him, not much had been done with him and he had some buck in him. Well, a lot of buck in him. Lots and lots of hours with this horse to earn his trust. He made his pickup debut in 2018 and has been outstanding so far. A Cadillac to ride and a beauty to look at, Coyote should be a great pickup horse.

Personlality:

He wants to be a friendly horse. Has a kind eye and a beautiful grey mane and tail. Still has some trust issues but is figuring it all out.

Horses We Remember

STARTCHARGINGTROUBLE  a.k.a. “Ritz” – sold to Chinook Valley Equine

Born:

May 21, 2005

About:

Ritz is a horse that we purchased from Joe Schwartz, one of Gary’s former co-workers on the Broken O Ranch.  Gary originally put 30-days on Ritz as a colt, as he was raised by Mike and Tanya Hitchcock.  He is a half brother to Gary’s pickup horse “Sully.”  He’s a well broke ranch gelding and made his pickup debut a week after he was purchased.  He went to a great home and now enjoys lots of pampering and riding year-round.

Color:

Buckskin

Personality:

Ritz is a very nice horse.  He thinks that he wants to buck every once in a while, especially when he gets in a tight situation… but nothing Gary can’t coax out of him.  He fits in well with the rest of the bunch and is gentle and nice to be around.  He went to the NFR his rookie year, 2013.

Cashs Rapid Trouble - “Elvis” laid to rest 2018

Born:

April 29, 2001

Breeding:

AQHA by Dun Cashed and out of DeJays June Bird. Bred in Nebraska.

Color:

Red Roan Dun

About:

Gary purchased Elvis from pickup man Scott McLain in 2008. Scott had used him as a pickup horse so he was already seasoned; he just has a habit of wanting to buck... which for the most part he grew out of. He is a very unusual roan/dun color. We sold him to CoBie and Dana Herr from Pincher Creek, Alberta; CoBie picked up on him and he became a treasured member of their family. Sadly, he passed away in November of 2018.

Personality:

He likes people, but for some reason didn’t like kids or dogs and would occasionally lift a hind leg as a “warning” when kids walked behind him. He could be an excellent pickup horse but when he gets mad or tired… you definitely knew it!

MILKY WAY MISTER a.k.a. “Crickett” – SOLD to Travis Erickson

Born:

6/10/2003

Breeding:

He is by Milky Way 499, a real nice stallion owned by our neighbors in Simms, Russ & Barb Pepper. He is out of Little Deamin Girl. Milky Way 499 is a grandson of Smart Little Lena.

Color:

Buckskin

About:

We purchased Crickett from Kirk & Mona Moore of Choteau, Montana. They had sent him to Gary for training as a 3 year old and happened to mention he was for sale. He is tall and smooth to ride. He made his pickup debut in 2010 and was one of just a few horses we own that have gone to the National Finals during their freshman year. He has been to both the NFR and CFR.

Personality:

Into everything. Accident-prone. Very friendly and gentle. Spooks at strange things, however! He likes to “cut” the other horses in the pasture... dogs them around for the longest time and cuts individual horses out of the herd for his own amusement. (and his owner’s consternation!)

Quisnos Dun Deal – “Quisno”

Born:

July 26, 2000

Breeding:

A Montana bred AQHA, by Heir of the Dog and out of Letter B Dun.

Color:

Dun

About:

Quisno was purchased from our horseshoer, Mike Hitchcock, in 2003. He was started but had some bad habits... after Gary put a year on him, we actually consigned him to the Montana Winter Fair Horse Sale, as a ranch gelding, but it wasn’t to be, I believe the sale was cancelled due to bad weather or lack of entries. Either way, Gary started to like him, he was smooth to ride, had a really fast walk, and was starting to come around. He took to pickup work pretty quickly and became his top pickup horse on the “A” String. He was sold to the Calgary Stampede Ranch in 2016 and is used by the Race/Arena Director Keith Marrington during the Calgary Stampede.

Personality:

Quisno is not real friendly and has “pig eyes”... He also likes to boss the other horses around.

**Quisno was involved in the Puyallup “steers loose on the cattle drive” incident (Jay Leno video) and Gary rode him into the mini mart that day… and in 2012 he was ridden into the beer garden at the Pendleton Roundup after a wild cow milking cow ran in there.

IRON RECOGNITION - a.k.a. “Twinkie” – died 2015

Born:

May 1, 1998

Breeding:

Twinkie is a registered Appaloosa, not that you could tell by his looks!  His sire is Recognition, by Dreamfinder; his Dam is Tips Poquito Canosa (AQHA) by Tippys Canoe.

Color:

Dark Brown

About:

We purchased Twinkie in the fall of 2004 from Nichole Kuchenbuch in Okanogan, Washington. She had started him on barrels but he was a bit spoiled an needed tuning up.  Now he is the most laid-back horse we have; he’s the one we often let the Queens ride.  He has been to both the Canadian Finals and the National Finals… and just about every rodeo in between.  We sold Twinkie in 2010 to a very good home in Calgary, Alberta and sadly, he passed away suddenly in 2015.

Personality:

Twinkie is a big suck… and he is very lazy. Any little scratch and he plays it up for all it’s worth. He is the horse in the graphics on Gary’s horsetrailer.

Silver Bar Captain – “Rainbow” - Laid to rest 2018

Born:

April 29, 1989

Breeding

Rainbow is a registered Quarter Horse, by Roan Bar 2 and out of Sweet Miss Silver, a Montana bred horse.

Color:

Dark Red Roan

About:

We purchased Rainbow as a 3 year old from the Broken O Ranch in Augusta, Montana, where Gary worked for a number of years. He was pretty spooky and broncy, snorted whenever anyone got close. Gary made sure that the first time he rode him, no one was around! He turned out to be just a natural as a pickup horse, but for many years kept his wary attitude. As far as pickup horses go, Rainbow is in the All-Star category, a sentiment that any of the pickup men that Gary has worked with would echo. He was retired in 2011 but came out of retirement in 2012 after we suddenly lost another horse. He also went to the NFR in 2016 as a “spare spare.” He has 3 iron-brands on him; a broken o on his left shoulder, a circle 7 on his left jaw, and a number brand under his mane. Rainbow was laid to rest in 2018.

Personality:

He’s not a “people-horse,” he would just as soon be left alone. He was known to be hard to catch… but got to be a softie in his older age.

Cowboy - RETIRED

Born:

1994

Breeding:

Sire is AQHA Horseshoe Poco, by Crimson War by Crimson Page. Horseshoe Poco goes back to Poco Bueno and Driftwood on his Dam’s side. He was bred by Floyd Johnson, Saskatchwan.

Color:

Dark Chocolate Palomino with platinum mane & tail.

About:

Gary purchased Cowboy as a 3 year old from a canner buyer in Swift Current, Sask. Named Vern Anderson. He had been bucking guys off (several trainers in a row, we have heard), and went through the sale loose. Vern bought him and immediately called Gary and said there’s a horse you need to see... he told Gary about him and Gary said I’ll take him. Cowboy was Jody’s birthday present that year (1997), but there was a hitch... the first time he saddled him up by the house, he took off running and bucking around the yard, and jumped a small fence... not exactly a lady’s horse just yet! Gary took the buck out of him in the next few weeks and Jody started riding him. He was incredibly smooth and naturally leaded, but he did have a habit of occasionally blowing up when he was saddled, a habit that continued throughout his riding career. Jody has shown Cowboy in open and reining shows in Montana and Idaho and when he was 7 he became a pickup horse too, taking to it like a fish to water. Cowboy suffered a career-ending injury at the 2007 National Finals Rodeo, injuring the collateral ligament to the coffin bone. After two years unsuccessfully trying to rehabilitate him he was retired and living on the ranch, enjoying being the boss of the herd.

Personality:

High Maintenance and he knows it. Not a real “people” horse, he is one of the herd bosses. He has “tied up” on us numerous times and once at the Calgary Stampede we almost lost him. His beautiful platinum mane and tail and good looks made him a favorite when he was on the road and people still ask about him.

CONCHO – SOLD to pickup man Travis Erickson, Saskatchewan

Born:

2000

Breeding:

Concho is a grade horse.

About:

Concho came from a ranch outside of Kyle, Saskatchewan, we bought him as a yearling. His unique feature are his short ears, which were most likely frozen off when he was born.. on a cool Saskatchewan spring day, one would assume. He also has a unique crooked blaze down his face. He is a cadillac to ride and is very light on the bit, it’s like riding a horse with cruise control. He has been to the Canadian Finals and the National Finals Rodeo. He is now owned by Murray Timmons.

Personality:

Concho is hyper... we think he has A-D-D.
